I am very grateful to see these bits of aicdve on here. I'm a freelance Graphic Designer who is lucky to do design work while doing another job. I live in a small town where wages for design work is a drop in the bucket. That's for the time being. But one day I'll be able to provide my skills for a hardworking company like yours. Thanks David some really useful info, I think they will to approach the new law with kid gloves and a relaxed attitude, allowing websites to continue to function!

The International Chamber of Commerce UK has just released a 15 page guide for business which has been endorsed by the ICO(the people who will police this directive) which states that for 'Performance cookies (includes analytics)' an opt-in statement such as “By using our [website][online service], you agree that we can place these types of cookies on your device.”, While not fully covering the ICO rules on the subject will be sufficient to appease them.

I'm in Canada, but just from observation and I may not know everything, it floors me that there is to be an internet Cookie law in the UK but the UK government wants to monitor cell and internet usage? I think that deserves a WTF - will you be able to opt out of that?

Cullen you and Darryl are spot on. I just had a client say them exact words to me the other day and I wont lie there was a point in my career where I would begin doubting what I charge. But after many experiences I soon realised that work cant be done at a low cost, one it devalues what we do and two it devalues the whole point of the business having a great website. Make them appreciate the value of it and in return they value you. Good comments both.

Good article, and Darryl your comment is on the money. Web design isn't going anywhere and any time I am in a meeting with a potential client, they may be interviewing me, but I am also interviewing them. If they come to the table with unreasonable expectations because their "friend" got a better deal somewhere else online, then by all means: go get your better deal. You get what you pay for. If you are a business owner and you want to skimp out on the one source of lead generation that should be providing you with the most leads and sales, then you shouldn't be in business.

Hi Darryl, Thanks for the comment and you are right. Which is the point I was trying to make in the article, even though there are many obstacles we face we need to convince clients to use a web developer.

To suggest Web design is dying (in the title of this post) because of things like hosting companies offering free templates and clients balking at £700.00 quotes is simply absurd.
Cheap out of the box solutions will always exist and the Web design and development field is no exception. If you're dealing with clients who feel compelled to nickel and dime your services it's time to take a big step back and re-evaluate the nature of the relationship, for the sake of professional integrity.
